TENGWAR

Implements the beautiful "tengwar" lettering system invented by J.R.R. Tolkien for his various constructed languages (Quenya, Sindarin, the Black Speech, etc.)

Because SymbOS does not support combining diacritics, it is not possible to render the full system of tehtar marks in the conventional manner (nor would they be distinguishable at this pixel resolution). This font is therefore most suitable for writing text in the alphabetic Mode of Beleriand, which omits tehtar. To facilitate this, the set of tengwar most commonly used in the Mode of Beleriand are arranged so as to occupy the codepoints corresponding to their closest phonetic analogues in the lowercase Latin alphabet (parma = p, tinco = t, ure = u, etc.)

A limited system of tehtar (more useful aesthetically than functionally) are provided at codepoints corresponding to capital Latin letters, numbers, and special characters. Broadly speaking, capital letters yield tengwar with a stroke resembling the -e, -o-, or -u tehtar (which all look similar at this resolution), while numbers and special characters yield tengwar with the iconic three-dot -a tehta. But, there are exceptions and other special cases dispersed throughout the character map.

CIRTH
Implements the runic script invented by J.R.R. Tolkien, in various configurations. The letters of the lowercase Latin alphabet nominally correspond to their closest phonetic analogues in the Angerthas Daeron, with capital letters yielding related combined sounds, but there are many exceptions. Other runes specific to the Angerthas Moria, Ereborian Cirth, and Gondolinic Cirth are also included as capitals, numbers, and special characters.

JPMSX
A (somewhat primitive) Japanese font, based on the Japanese localization of the MSX system font. Follows the JIS character mapping adopted by the MSX, so most katakana/hiragana are in the upper 128 characters and not readily accessible from from the keyboard in SymbOS. The "extended graphics" characters normally preceeded by the control code 0x01 in MSX-format documents are here placed at their absolute locations of 0x40-0x5F, replacing the Latin capital letters; this is not the ideal way of implementing the JIS mapping, but should allow some ability to read MSX-format Japanese documents without modification.

ATI MONO - A monospace serif font with a "DOS VGA" feel, inspired by the 6x8 font included with the ATI 18700 CGA graphics card from 1988.
CHEROKEE - The Cherokee syllabary, arranged so that typing in the EN-US keyboard layout will behave as the Cherokee Nation keyboard layout.
CODE - A 4x9 monospaced font optimized for source code.
CODE SLIM - A 3x9 extra-narrow version of CODE.
CODE WIDE - A 5x9 extra-wide version of CODE.
DINGBATS - Various symbols and icons.
KLINGON - Implements the Klingon Language Institute version of the Klingon script from the Star Trek universe.
GUTENB - A heavy blackletter font inspired by the type used in the Gutenberg Bible.
MONO SANS - A compact 4x8 sans-serif monospace font, intended as a sans-serif alternative to the system Courier font.
SERAPH - A serif font. (Get it?)
SPINDLE - An extra-narrow 8px sans-serif font, suitable for use as the system font.
